Newly Released Michael Jackson DVDsSince the King of Pop’s Death, His DVD Sales Have Increased
New compilations, tributes, biographies, and retrospectives seem to come out every few weeks honoring Michael Jackson.
After Michael Jackson’s shocking death on June 25, 2009, his older music DVDs have been among the best-selling products at online and brick-and-mortar retailers. Current top sellers include Michael Jackson – Dangerous: The Short Films (1993), Michael Jackson – Video Greatest Hits – HIStory (1995), Michael Jackson – History on Film, Vol. 2 (1997), Number Ones (2003), and Michael Jackson: Live in Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour (2005). Live in Japan and This is It (2009) was released on DVD in June just before his death, followed by a rash of recent releases hoping to marry well-timed marketing savvy with outpouring of public sentiment. Fans also can prepare for the upcoming documentary This Is It, based on his rehearsals for the comeback concerts in London. July offered two new MJ tributes and retrospectives, and September provides two more. With such a large body of work, an unusual lifestyle, and a legion of loyal fans, new Jackson DVDs may continue for some time. July 13 DVD Release: Michael Jackson: A Farewell to the King of Pop Michael Jackson: A Farewell to the King of Pop (2009) Amazon.com Exclusive This footage contains interviews with fans outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles on July 7, 2009 before and after Michael Jackson’s memorial service. Interviewees include people from all over the world, including performers and impersonators. Each person is asked the same set of questions about the personal significance of Michael Jackson and his music. The memorial service, which was broadcast live on television, is not included in this tribute.
July 14 DVD Release: Michael Jackson: The Trial and Triumph of the King of Pop Michael Jackson: The Trial and Triumph of the King of Pop (2009) This DVD goes behind the scenes of Jackson’s child molestation trial, rather than focusing on his music. Special appearances by friends and family include Jermaine Jackson, Kanye West, Jon Voight, Fantasia, Mo’Nique, Yolanda Adams, Aphrodite Jones, and Terry Lewis.
September 1 DVD Release: Michael Jackson: Devotion – An Unauthorized Tribute Michael Jackson: Devotion – An Unauthorized Tribute (2009) This tribute takes a positive spin on the complicated private and professional life of the late entertainer. His devoted fans, charity work, and colossal success in the music industry are the primary subjects here, rather than the more controversial aspects of his life.
September 15 DVD Release: Michael Jackson: Never Surrender Michael Jackson: Never Surrender (2009) This DVD attempts to tell the full story of Jackson’s entire career in show business including unseen footage, rare and exclusive interviews, and compilations of reports from a wide variety of sources. Location shoots also are included.
