Sit back and watch the real power behind the throne, editor in chief Anna Wintour, in this powerful look behind the rise of Vogue through director R.J. Cutler's control.
Is it fair to compare two movies? Sure it is if they have roughly the same subject matter and appear at the same time. Coco Chanel was a fashion icon from the 40s through the swinging 60s. Recent efforts to chart her life in Coco avant Chanel concentrated more on her love life than the glamour of the fashion world. Move over Coco for there’s a new kid on the block. Well, maybe not that new. Whether you’re into fashion or not odds are good that you’ll be dazzled by a smart new documentary named The September Issue. Back a few years ago Meryl Streep caused quite a sensation in the hilarious comedy The Devil Wears Prada. Those in the know immediately understood that Ms. Streep’s character was supposed to be the editor of Vogue Magazine. Now we get to see the real “pro” in action as The September Issue traces the development of this fashion bible in 2007. Eyes focus in on Anna Wintour, the determined leader of this publication powerhouse. The September Issue Offers Great insight into Daily Grind of Magazine Publishing Behind the scenes we go as we get to literally “eavesdrop” on all the back room dealings that go into making a magazine. Unlike other publications, however, when you’re talking Vogue you’re talking fashion, glamour, glitz and super models. Industry insiders and outsiders alike regard Ms. Wintour as sort of a relentless dragon lady, ready to snipe at all who come her way. Nothing could be further from the truth judging from how she carries out her daily activities here to pull off a runaway bestseller. Just like the exotic photo shoots inside this fabled publication we’re transported to glamorous locales like Paris and Rome as we see what goes into making those glossy pages that beckon women to buy! Men too succumb to those enticements. Apart from the obvious beautiful people and excitement of all those fashion shows and photo shoots we get to see the “relationship” Ms. Wintour has with her employees, or should I say co-workers. Chief among these hired hand hands is Grace Cuddington, arguably the brains behind the whole operation. Egos Run Rampant in High Power World of International FashionEbb and flows occur between these two fashion giants whose tastes do determine what dresses chain stores by and the elites covet. Backstabbing just below the surface gnaws away at the intensity in this and other relationships that fuel the fire in this winning look at an industry that’s often under wraps despite the media attention. Gorgeous costumes obviously highlight this visual treat that more importantly shows the daily grind of putting a magazine together over many months. Consider the end result to be an enjoyable look into the world of fashion and the power-brokers who turn dreams into reality. Director R.J. Cutler knows his way around making documentaries and succeeds here in turning those with no interest in clothes into excited purchasers.
