The list of DVD compilations and tributes to the King of Pop lengthens as the holidays draw near. New DVDs (and CDs and books) are hitting the shelves and online stores so fast that sometimes product details remain sketchy in the distributors’ rush to strike while the iron is hot.
Recent DVD Releases About Michael Jackson
Immediately after his tragic death on June 25, 2009, a flurry of DVD releases instantly appeared on store shelves. This was soon followed by another wave of releases around his birthday on August 29, followed by this most recent group of DVD releases just in time for the theatrical engagement for This Is It (which opened October 28) and the beginning of the holiday shopping season.
These Michael Jackson DVDs released during the past few months include Live in Japan (June 2009), Michael Jackson: A Farewell to the King of Pop (July, 2009), Michael Jackson: The Trial and Triumph of the King of Pop (July, 2009),Michael Jackson: Devotion – An Unauthorized Tribute (September, 2009), and Michael Jackson: Never Surrender (September, 2009).
This Is It on DVD
This Is It, a documentary of Jackson's final rehearsals before his planned 2009 comeback concert series, has been so successful at international box offices that its initial two-week run has been extended in most markets. Despite outrage and criticism prior to its theatrical release, This Is It has most fans and movie critics singing its praises for an exciting and respectful tribute to Michael Jackson’s legacy.
Directed by Kenny Ortega (who also directed the High School Musical series and choreographed films including Dirty Dancing [1987], Ferris Bueller’s Day Off [1986], and Xanadu [1980]), the movie will soon be released on DVD. While the world awaits this release – currently the number one movie in America, the number one album on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the top-selling item in the Movie and TV department of Amazon.com at the time of this writing – fans can bide their time with other new MJ DVDs that highlight various aspects of the King of Pop’s career.
